I love giving back to the SPCA through shopping at the Op shop in Vanguard Street Nelson. Today I was there and placed sheets and hand towels in a pillow case to hold on to. I also was in the bin of clothing with another pillow case sorting through clothing (Fill a pillowcase for $2.00 dollars. I fully acknowledge the workers are all volunteers and I thank them for the work they do. Today a volunteer came up to me politely and said,, excuse me but you can’t put towels in pillow cases, I explained to her that I was using pillow case to hold 6 hand towels and several sheets. She then took the pillow case and said no you can’t do that and took all the hand towels out. I was so embarrassed as there were about 4 other shoppers witnessing this situation. I told her you’re making me feel like I’m stealing them and I’m not a thief. She continued to take out the hand towels out, placed them on the chair and left. A female witness came up to me and comforted me as I was upset.
I spoke to the manager and while she apologised, the volunteers actions made me feel like a thief. I asked the volunteer for an apology as she singled me out in front of other shoppers and inferred by her actions that I was a thief.
I will continue to shop there as it’s one of my favourite Op shop. I ask that your volunteers not point out brown women as suspected thieves as I am not a thief. As a current Justice of the Peace my reputation is not worth a pillow case of hand towels.
Thank you for time.
